Oregon Senator Ron Wyden wrote a letter to Samuel W. Bodman, Secretary of Energy on September 2nd, 2008. In it, Senator Wyden noted that on June 3 and on July 30, 2008 that the Department of Energy issued orders that would allow two major integrated oil companies - ConocoPhillips and Marathon Oil - to export 98.1 billion cubic feet of Alaskan natural gas to Japan and other Pacific Rim countries. This order allows the export of as much natural gas as is used by 1.4 million Americans in a year.
