JC Democrats Education Series Open to the Entire Community
"Watching the Supremes: The Importance of the Court and Its Impact on All of Us"
Thursday, January 26, 6:30 p.m.
Oregon Education Association building, 2495 S Pacific Hwy, Medford
Wolf Hoppe, as our special guest speaker, will focus on the makeup of the Supreme Court, its ideological schism, and how cases get there; and will illustrate by discussing a recent case. He is a retired trial lawyer, adjunct professor of law and U.S. Foreign Service Officer. Wolf has been teaching courses at OLLI at SOU (formerly SOLIR) on the U.S. Constitution, the U.S. Supreme Court and related topics since retiring in Ashland in 1999.

Over 100 people, representing the Occupy Groups and others, gathered at Vogel Plaza and marched to the Courthouse to call for an amendment to the Constitution to end corporate personhood. The movement is gaining steam. City by city, across the nation, resolutions are being passed to overturn the Supreme Court decision, Citizens United vs The Federal Election Commission. Speakers included Robert Dole (Medford), Elbert Collins (Grants Pass), Evan, Keith and Andrew Seles (Ashland) and Rich Rhode of Oregon Action. The rain didn't dampen the spirits and kept up lively chants," Hay Hay, Ho Ho, Corporate Greed has got to go!"
Educate yourselves about the proposed changes to the Oregon education system from pre-kindergarten through college. Governor Kitzhaber's initiative focuses on early childhood programs and school readiness for the 0-5 population in order to give children a better start in their education. The proposal includes youth development for students from 6-20 and career readiness. The university system will have more independence. SB 909 was passed in the 2011 Session to establish the Oregon Education Investment Board and the Early Learning Council.

Secretary of State Kate Wows the Crowd
Thanks to all our friends and PCPs who turned out for Secretary of State Kate Brown. We learned what the Secretary of State does as well as being our chief elections officer and what she hopes to accomplish in her next term. It was an uplifting presentation.
Thanks to all of you who attended our "Occuparty" at Roscoe's BBQ January 5th. The place was packed with people and the music by Pete Herzog & Patrick Tovatt, followed by the Rogue Suspects, was incredible.

Last Tuesday OSPRIG (Oregon Student Public Interest Research Group) hosted a panel discussion featuring Sen. Bates and Rep. Buckley. Panelists and community members discussed the history of corporate personhood and the implications of the court case Citizens United vs. the FEC. Over 115 community members attended this thought provoking panel at Southern Oregon University.
One point emphasized was that we citizens have been complacent over the past thirty years and allowed various laws to be passed that were and are not for the good of all. It’s time to correct the situation. Get educated and vote.

Happy Thanksgiving to All!

As the holidays approach, the giant foreign factories are kicking into high gear to provide Americans with monstrous piles of cheaply produced goods -- merchandise that has been produced at the expense of American labor. This is concern for other Americans. There is no longer an excuse that, at gift giving time, nothing can be found that is produced by American hands. Yes there is! It’s time to think outside the box, people. Who says a gift needs to fit in a shirt box, wrapped in foreign-produced wrapping paper?
And A Good Time Was Had By All...
Thanks to the 160 fun-loving supporters who joined us for the JCD Fall Fundraiser event on Sunday, October 30 at the Red Lion Inn!
Honored guest speaker, Secretary of State, Kate Brown, wowed the crowd. Our other equally impressive speakers, State Senator Alan Bates, State Rep. Peter Buckley, Joyce Segers, candidate for 2nd Congregational District 2, and Beth Heckert, candidate for Jackson County District Attorney, were sensational. The event went off without a hitch thanks to the JCD Fundraising Committee, led by Arlene Rogers. Click here to see photos taken by Helga Motley.
